Beyond Tariffs: Why the India-UK FTA Is Really About Trust
By eliminating tariffs on 99% of Indian tariff lines, including products across the chemical value chain, the agreement improves market access for Indian firms significantly. But access has never guaranteed success. It only creates the opportunity to compete. The real differentiator is trust. Over the last few years, supply chain disruptions, geopolitical tensions and evolving regulatory expectations have directed procurement priorities. Purchasing decisions are now influenced as much by consistency, compliance and resilience as they are by price. In today’s uncertain world, customers want confidence that their suppliers can deliver uninterrupted quality while also meeting increasingly stringent environmental standards. This shift presents a defining opportunity for India's chemical industry. India already possesses many of the fundamentals. According to PwC, the chemical sector contributes around 7% of the country's GDP and 14% of the Index of Industrial Production , making it one of India's most important manufacturing sectors. The country has steadily built capabilities across specialty chemicals, intermediates, agrochemicals and performance materials, strengthening its credentials as a dependable manufacturing base.

However, the next phase of growth demands a mindset shift. For years,Indian manufacturers have competed primarily on cost and technical capability.Going forward, competitive advantage will increasingly come from operational excellence. This requires adopting robust quality systems, adhering to sustainability, ensuring regulatory compliance and the ability to consistently deliver on customer commitments. In other words, the conversation is moving from capacity to capability. This is particularly relevant for India's MSMEs. Many already possess specialised expertise and the agility to respond quickly to customer needs. The India–UK FTA gives them greater access to international markets. But long-term success will depend on their ability to meet global expectations on quality, governance and process discipline.

Encouragingly, the sector’s policies are evolving alongside industry. The Indian government's BHAVYA Rasayan initiative to develop world-class chemical parks reflects an understanding that globally competitive manufacturing requires more than favourable trade agreements. Infrastructure, integrated ecosystems and innovation are equally important in strengthening India's position as a trusted manufacturing hub.

The India–UK FTA should therefore be viewed as a catalyst rather than a conclusion. It creates the conditions for growth, but it does not determine who will grow. That responsibility rests with manufacturers.

The companies that succeed over the next decade will not necessarily be those with the largest capacities or the lowest prices. They will be those that become indispensable partners. The companies which customers can rely on to deliver quality, reliability and consistency when supply chains are tested.

Trade agreements can reduce barriers. Only execution builds reputation. And in today's chemical industry, reputation has become one of the most valuable competitive advantages of all. The India–UK FTA has opened new doors for Indian manufacturers. Walking through them, however, will require something no trade agreement can provide: trust. Which is why, even after all the discussions around tariffs, I believe the future of India's chemical industry will be determined less by the agreements we sign and more by the trust we build.
